Role purpose

The role would be one in which they would be responsible for the direct project management of projects under one of our current staff EG Construction Manager (Jeremy) or PM . More often than not you will be working as part of a larger engineering team on a larger projects. The work will all be all Regionally based with scopes relating to Infrastructure relating to Resources, Water and Energy sectors.

Hanlon Street Pump Station Upgrade the Sewer Pump Station Renewals project showcases Pensar's expertise in upgrading existing sewer pump stations, which may reflect similar construction and engineering approach. Commencing in November 2024, the upgrade involves constructing a new sewage pump station adjacent to the existing facility. Once operational, the old station will be decommissioned. The project aims to enhance wastewater services, improve flood resilience, and accommodate future growth in the area.

The Rookwood Weir Fishway project is helping fish species move safely and more freely in the Lower Fitzroy River system. As part of the project’s environmental offset strategy, a $7 million fishway is to be added to the Fitzroy Barrage, located at Rockhampton, downstream of the weir. Construction of the fishway will support 12 jobs and provide 31 native fish species access to 545 hectares of habitat.

Role Context

The Tenancy Coordinator will be assigned with multiple retail & commercial upgrades happening at BAC in relation to tenancy coordination.

They will act as the lead for the coordination of the design, approvals, construction and commissioning of tenant related works.

Tasks and Responsibilities

• Manage Tenancy Coordination processes for retail and commercial tenants in accordance with BAC Guidelines and Lease Agreements.
• Maintain consistent and thorough communication with tenants, property, asset management and leasing ensuring that all parties are kept properly informed.
• Develop and maintain collaborative partnerships with internal BAC stakeholders, tenants, and their suppliers.
• Undertake proactive stakeholder management as a “Partner of Choice”.

Role context and purpose

Due to continued growth, Pensar has an opening for a high performing Estimator to join our team in the Sunshine Coast, Coolum office 

This role will be in the Structures Department which has a budget of $45M and average project value around $3M. The Director, Tim Down, currently leads the Estimating function for Structures and this role will work closely with him whilst reporting to Matt Smith the Precontracts Manager. It is envisaged that the successful Estimator can step up and succeed Tim in the role of Estimating Manager in the next two years.

You're a highly competent and committed Estimator with a background in Concrete Structures projects in Civil or Water projects; where you have gained a proven track record of efficiently leading comprehensive pricing on a variety of tenders from $2m - $20m projects including Bridges, Culverts, Tanks, Boat Ramps, Reservoirs ETC. You are accustomed to taking responsibility for the full tender lifecycle, thriving on using your logic and lateral thinking to evaluate work methods, investigate alternatives, consider techniques of construction and thoroughly research material/ plant/ labour costs; all to provide innovative and value-adding solutions for our customers.

Redland Bay Vehicle Ferry Terminal Upgrade This project involves the upgrade of SeaLink’s Redland Bay Vehicle Ferry Terminal to accommodate a new fleet of ferries. Pensar began the design of this project in mid-2020. Following an extensive design & development approvals process, construction works began in February 2023 to be delivered across two stages. The project involves dredging, sheet piling, rock reclamation and armour, berthing piles as near shore marine works. Shore works will include full underground service upgrades on site including new Energex power supply and site reticulation, 70kL diesel fuel system, potable water and sewer from vessel to mains. Civil works comprise concrete abutments, road pavements and asphalt surfacing, in addition to constructing new buildings including services shed and prefabricated ticket booth.

Matt Smith – Precontracts Manager

In his second successful stint with Pensar, Matt is a Civil Engineer with 15 years experience delivering multi-disciplinary projects in Transport, Resources, Water and Energy. Matt commenced his career on site with Clough and progressed through the ranks working on complex projects with plenty of challenge before climbing the ranks with Zinfra, Pensar and Abergeldie culminating in his return to Pensar to head up the work winning function. Matt is married and a proud Dad to 3 under 5yo and he is a mad keen sports fan who stays active and ensures his own health and fitness is taken care of. He is a personable individual with a supportive leadership style that thrives on clear communication and empowerment.

Pat is one of the brightest most energetic professionals you will meet. He has boundless enthusiasm and can’t help but move at pace. Pat started his journey with Pensar as a Graduate Engineer in 2009, after working on Civil projects he launched the Pensar Water business and turned it into the darling of the Group in terms of culture, customer satisfaction and profit. Pat has recently been promoted to COO and I am sure he will be a wild success in the role. Pat is a sporty individual, he loves the All Blacks and is often found training for a challenging athletic pursuit like a triathlon. Away from work he is a great Dad to his two young kids.

Jane Death – Group Business & Strategy Manager

Jane is a dynamo with a diverse skillset and broad experience and a winning personality, positive energy and fabulous people skills. Jane has been at Pensar for 7+ years now and she is a great example of the company’s ability to harness talent and reward performance and attitude with development, progression and promotion.

Michael Bissett – Director

Michael is a Director of Pensar Infrastructure, this is his second stint with the company and he is responsible for winning and delivering some of the most challenging and profitable projects in Pensar’s history. Michael started his career with Leighton Contractors (now CPB) and worked on massive infrastructure projects in Australia and Southeast Asia. He is one of the brightest and most committed individuals you could meet in the industry.

Tim Down – Director – Structures

A reformed Builder Tim is the main man in Pensar’s Concrete Structures department having been with the company for 15 years. Known for his practical experience and knowledge of all things vertical construction and concrete Tim has a larrikin sense of humour, he loves a glass of wine, watching sport and running around with his 3 teenage sons.

Troy Elder – Operations Manager, Water

Troy is a legend, he comes from humble beginnings in the Plumbing Trade but far more exciting was his Olympic Gold Medal winning heroics as a member of the Hockeyroos. Troy is a quiet and considered, high performer who is calm and resilient with a big focus on clarity, accountability and teamwork. He is a great colleague, leader and general human.

Jared Candler – Owner of JC Civil Projects 

Jared is a well-regarded Civil Engineer and Estimator who has worked on some challenging major projects from concept to completion. Jared is down to earth, considerate and has a good sense of humour. Effective delegation and not micromanaging are the hallmarks of his leadership style. He has high standards but is flexible and his clients are loyal to him and his team. A forward thinker and a fan of flexibility so where possible he likes to demonstrate trust and respect by allowing work from home. Away from work Jared will often be seen surfing and spending quality time with his wife and two sons.

Scott is an accomplished Civil Engineer who gained solid site experience with leading Tier 2 contractors Civdec and CMC before transitioning into a focus on Estimating. Scott utilises his site experience to positive impact staging and methodology creation and he is also able to ensure clients understand the practicalities of what is and isn’t possible. Scott is very easy to deal with, he is a positive and open communicator who creates a friendly work atmosphere that benefits from diverse ideas and thinking. Scott is great to work with and is supportive of his colleagues success and happiness.

Scott Larson – Principal Civil Engineer – Project Delivery  

Scott is an accomplished Civil Engineer who gained solid site experience with leading Tier 2 contractors such as Shadforth before transitioning into the Consulting realm with JC Civil. Scott is an energetic and motivated individual with brains and a sense of humour. He is great fun to be around and is very supportive of his colleagues success and happiness. Away from work he is a dedicated Dad, average Golfer and Crossfit enthusiast.

About the opportunity

This is an impactful position helping an already successful and growing contractor make the most of all the opportunities coming their way. Your day to day will see you working to deliver comprehensive, detailed and ultimately competitive tenders. Reporting to the Estimating Manager with interaction with the Director, you’ll work with an established support team to target Civil projects in Southeast Queensland.

A normal day in this role

• First principle estimating to meet quality standards and agreed timelines
• Liaising and negotiating with subcontractors and suppliers regarding your tenders
• Managing the bid process and supporting colleagues to present tenders in best light
• Working with colleagues, subcontractors, and suppliers to unlock value and advantages.
• Giving your insights and advice on practical construction including methodologies and program.
• Analysing risks and opportunities to improve and sharpen estimates.
• Participating in pre- and post-tender negotiations to secure successful outcomes.
• Apply your problem solving skills and experience to solve challenges and enhance methodologies.
• Networking with contacts to understand the market, prices and any new players

Your Skills and Attributes

• Tertiary Qualifications in Civil Engineering or similar an advantage

• 5+ years of civil estimating in Southeast Queensland.

• First principles estimating particularly in Earthworks.
• Strong capability utilising Pronamics Expert Estimation
• Able to apply an innovative approach to “out Engineer” the opposition not just be cheap.
• An ability to help the team achieve corporate and client objectives
• Strong planning, reporting and analytical expertise
• Relationship management, conflict management and resolution and problem-solving expertise, with an ability to think outside the box

Subdivisions & Local Government infrastructure projects including bulk and detailed earthworks, civil works for residential, industrial and commercial developments and local government projects including road and service upgrades.

#1 Civil works for Frucor Suntory’s $400M multi-beverage facility in Swanbank – Cut to fill, stormwater and detailed Earthworks - $10M

#2 Pimpama Train Station – external Civil Works and Carparks (TMR Spec) - $8.5M

• Pimpama is one of three sites – including Hope Island and Merrimac – where stations will be built on the Gold Coast line as part of Cross River Rail.
• Key station features include five accessible car parks, through-lifts on each platform, a 40-bike lock-up enclosure and a pedestrian overpass.
• Larger taxi and kiss’n’ride bays;
• Assistance animal toileting facilities.
• Tactile boarding matts at accessible boarding points; and
• Improved location and layout for accessible and ambulant toilets.
• In response to community feedback, approximately 380 car parks that were going to be delivered in two stages will now be delivered on opening day.
• There is also provision for 200 extra car parks in the future to accommodate forecasted population growth.
• Early works and site establishment have been undertaken in late 2022, and major construction will commence in early 2023 and finish late 2024
